While certainly not a conceal candidate the Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in 454 Casull is a viable alternative to a long gun in bear country. Most often I''m asked about the recoil. In 45 it is pleasant and in Casull it is brisk but not unmanageable. I would reccommend the weapon for experienced shooters due to its weight, extreme power ]~50-60 higher than a 44 magnum[, and ammo expense. The ''fun-o-meter'' is though pegged!
